Two Visions by Hansen & Roy
Two Visions of Newfoundland & Labrador - Deux Visions de Terre Neuve et Labrador represents the collobaration of two artists - Ben Hansen and Jean Claude Roy. Natives of Denmark and France respectivley, each is well-known for his protrayal of the province over the past thirty years - Ben with his many books of photographs and Jean Claude as a landscape painter. For this project, they travelled the province together in 2003, sharing their knowledge and experiencing the different demands of the two media. The result is 138 pages of colour plates - half photographs, half paintings - showing their different interpretations of their favourite places.
In recognition of the 2004 events celebrationg the history of French association with Newfoundland, the text by Christina Roy, is presented in both French and English. Translation from English to French was done by Marie Christine Halliday, with graphics design by Sarah Hansen.
A chance meeting between a photographer and a painter, Regatta Day 2001 began this collaboration of two artist. In 2003 they made a working trip to their favourite places around the province. The photographs and paintings in this book record that voyage around the province. Two artists who have become Newfoundlanders but still occasionally see it through a foreign eye.
