Trans Canada Trail: Newfoundland, written by Sue Lebrecht and
published by Canadian Geographic Enterprises, was released in 2003, and deals
exclusively with the route of the TCT in that province.
Trail users will be pleased with the book. Ring bound and attractively
covered, it features a province-wide map in the back cover that shows the
approximate geographic area covered by each chapter of the text. Working from
Port Aux Basques, the ferry connection to Nova Scotia and the rest of Canada,
the book explores the 883-km Newfoundland T'Railway in 20 separate chapters,
finishing in the provincial capital, St. John's.
Each chapter begins with a map, showing that section's start and finish,
and several points of interest in between. The regions profiled are not off
uniform length; chapters vary from the busy 14.6-kms in St. John's to the
lonely 104.1-km between Howley to Badger, passing through the isolated Topsail
Mountains.
Trail users will find many features of this book extremely helpful.
Lebrecht begins each chapter with a list of the highlights along that part of
the trail, and also provides a difficulty rating for the treadway. "A" is
resurfaced with crusher dust and is, in Lebrecht's words, "ideal". Beware of
the dreaded "E" rating, however. This, she maintains, is only for the
"diehards", and suggest that a "sense of humour" is necessary.
Maybe even more important on such a long trail, a list of
facilities/amenities - lodging, stores, and campsites - is found at the start
of each chapter right after a brief overview of the general conditions of the
profiled section.
