Another great book from Newfoundland's favourite story teller.
The Day Grenfell Cried is Earl Pilgrims true story of what
happened when Dr. Wilfred Grenfell helped the poor people of northern
Newfoundland and Labrador. Grenfell's problems with the fish merchants started
when he helped form cooperatives, beginning with the one in Red Bay, Labrador,
in 1896.
Living conditions, both on the Labrador coast and onboard merchant-owned
vessels returning to Newfoundland after a summer's fishing, were a far cry
from the way many of us vintage gentlemen, and gentleladies, first learned of
them in our grade six[?] history book The Story of Newfoundland and Labrador.
