The SS Ethie and the Hero Dog chronicles a shipwreck on the rocky shores of Western Newfoundland. In 1919 the coastal ferry SS Ethie went aground in a fierce storm but thanks to the combined heroism of a local fisherman and his Newfoundland dog all 92 persons were rescued. Or was there a dog involved at all? In 1999, Bruce Ricketts started on a five year adventure, which took him from Newfoundland to Alaska and back, in order to answer the question. The SS Ethie has become the subject of folk songs and theatre and always the question is left unanswered – until now.
