Before the SS Viking left St. John's in March of 1931 newspapers of the day reported she was sailing into movie-making history. But no one ever dreamt the ship would be sailing to her doom. On board the Viking was movie director Varick Frissell and his camera crew from New York, there to finish shooting the film "White Thunder" for Paramount Pictures. This story, The Day of Varick Frissell, is about the greatest hunt in the world - the seal hunt - and about the men who plunged out of the Narrows of St. John's and into the unknown. It is also the untold story of Varick Frissell and the explosion that blew the Viking apart.
