Gene rocked back and forth with his dead son in his arms. The people who had
been in hiding came out and gathered around them. The sirens suddenly stopped
and Gene felt an arm on his shoulder. He looked up to see a policeman looking
down at him. "He shot my son. He killed my boy." Gene drew his son to his
chest.
"There's an ambulance on the way," the policeman said.
" The man who did it is on the sidewalk." Gene heard one of the
onlookers say. " He tackled him and beat him senseless." he heard another.
Gene heard another siren. It was the ambulance, but it was too late.
"Don't tell Becky." he said to no one in particular. " Please don't tell my
wife."
