Mundy Pond by Roger Maunder
Mundy Pond is a coming-of-age story about young Gordie MacAllister that’s set in Newfoundland in the late 1970’s. Gordie and Jimmy, best friends, find themselves at a turning point in their lives in the summer of 1978 when a whole series of new things are introduced to them. It is a time when they both realize that things aren’t always fun and games. Jimmy has been accustomed to a brutal, alcoholic father and Gordie has some heavy issues creeping into his sheltered life such as his mother’s cancer and his parent’s separation. Through their lost innocence, an understanding is gained.
Although the book is aimed at young adults, I think anyone who grew up in Newfoundland, especially in the 1970's would appreciate and enjoy the novel.
