Heroes of Isle Aux Morts by Alice Walsh
The waters surrounding the rocky shores of Isle aux Morts are as treacherous as they are beautiful. One morning in July 1832, Anne awakes to a terrible storm. The distress signal is sounding. A ship, the Despatch, is in danger of breaking up in the pounding waves. Anne wastes no time in waking her father and brother. With their Newfoundland dog, Hairy Man, they race to their boat. It is Hairy Man, with his great stamina and courage, who saves the day. Those who admire the Newfoundland dog will not be surprised by the deeds of this shaggey, gentle hero. The true story of the rescue of the passengers from the Despatch is perfectly complemented by Geoff Butler's dramatic paintings. Today a coast guard ship plies the waters of Newfoundland, named after Anne Harvey in recognition of her heroism. Illustrated by Geoff Butler.
