Award-winning author Robin McGrath offers a compendium of traditional nursery
rhymes of Newfoundland and Labrador. Through this work, the rich and vital
culture of the province comes alive.
This collection of traditional rhymes, charms, riddles and ditties
brings together almost three hundred verses known throughout Newfoundland and
Labrador by generations of children and adults. Most of the verses contain a
place name. personal name or linguistic structure that identities them as
being of Newfoundland or Labrador origin. The remaining verses have retained
the rhythms and wording they had upon their arrival centuries ago from
Ireland, France and Scotland.
A few original verses from the north of the province have been added to
round out the selection. Decoralive cast cuts, originally used by Long
Brothers' hand presses in St. John's, have been used to illustrate the verses.
Explanatory notes clarify the historic origins of some of these
delightful and memorable nursery rhymes.
Several blank pages have been included at the back to allow readers to
personalize their copies with their own family verses.
