In 2006 the Government of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Newfoundland Books presents the Provincial Brand Signaturedeclared the image shown at the right to be the Provincial Government’s new Brand Signature. The new brand signature incorporates a stylized image of the provincial flower, the pitcher plant.

The pitcher plant (sarracenia purpurea) is an important piece of our history and the provincial landscape. It is a unique and hardy plant found on bogs and marshes throughout Newfoundland and Labrador that produces wine and green-coloured flowers. It collects insects for nutrients in water that collects in the pitcher-shaped leaves attched to its base. This insectivorous plant feeds off the insects which become trapped in the water. Most other plants find nutrients in the soil, but the pitcher plant has adapted to an environment deficient in these nutrients by finding this alternate source. The leaves and structure of the plant are very well developed to suit the environment and are naturally and remarkably beautiful.

More than 100 years ago, Queen Victoria chose the pitcher plant to be engraved on a newly minted Newfoundland penny. The image below is image of a one cent coin minted in 1941 by the Government of Newfoundland prior becoming a province of Canada and displays the pitcher plant. In 1954 the Newfoundland Cabinet designated this interesting plant as the official flower of the province.
