About Newfoundland and Labrador

Newfoundland and Labrador Weather

The weather in Newfoundland and Labrador is quite varied across the province. Proximity to the ocean has a major influence on the weather, keeping the winters marginally warmer along the coast and keeping the summers cooler. The province realizes abundant precipitation and cloud, shortness of sunshine, and relatively high winds.

The climate is influenced by the cold Labrador Current, which sweeps down the east coast of Labrador and has its greatest effect on the eastern and north-eastern regions of Newfoundland. The interior of the island and the west coast realize hotter summers and colder winters.

Similarly, the climate of the coast of Labrador is significantly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean and the Labrador Current. The interior, however, experiences a more continental type of climate with hot summers and cold winters.
